I recall...being strangers to change

Dear Sloane,

On the day you were 17 months old your cousin Ledger Matthew was born.  I was a wreck all day long helping your aunt Tay through a harrowing 48 hour labor and delivery, that we are all more than thankful ended well.

A few days after delivery: I am just so glad we got to have this moment.

aunt Tay & Ledger Matthew, Sloane and Grammy

When we finally got to see aunt Tay after the c-section and subsequent allergic reaction (par for the Taylorcourse) you walked into the room so excited to see her.  You were the one who made her so happy because you wanted only to see her-- the rest of us were waiting to meet baby Ledger (although he was still "baby boy" until morning).  When you saw Ledger for the first time you exclaimed:  "Hi Tiny!"

You adore your cousin.  On the days you don't see him you walk around saying "babybabybabybaby".  Every time you touch him you are gentle (so far) and give him sweet kisses on the top of his head.

When we left Ledger had to go back to NICU for his antibiotics etc...You told him to be strong.

I am pleasantly surprised that you give little attention to me or your bff grammy when we are holding Ledger. We thought you might not do so well with this as the last few weeks of the pregnancy you got very into "being a baby" (your interpretation of this as seen below)

A one year old--shoved into a bumbo, with a bottle, whining...truly lovely

So happy that you are adjusting so well to the new things in your world.  Even though you recently learned to verbalize "no" and love to use it in combination "nonononononononono!" while running away, you still are adjusting to this change with a bit of grace (as much grace as a toddler can possibly possess and exude, which frankly isn't that much).

Love you,

Mama

How was I to know there was a party goin' on?

We had a wonderful weekend in Kansas City. So nice to catch up with our friends and Sloane got to spend a little quality time with K's mom. I got to eat my favorite salsa. Time in Kansas City always goes quickly. Sloane was terrified of the water at first but soon took to it and loved our time at the waterpark for Maxx and Quinn's birthday parties.

Suddenly she was having fun!

These two shared some fun water time, a few hugs and a few more kisses

you could shine a little light on everything around you

Things have been a little crazy lately.  Quite busy and very blessed.  Keenan started his new position and so daddy daycare is no longer in operation.  Sloane goes to grammy's all day.  She is very happy to hang out with grandma all day and grandpa on his lunch break.  It's great because Keenan goes to work early and gets off early and I go to work later and get off later.  So I get to spend the early morning getting Sloane ready and off to grammy's and Keenan gets to pick her up in the early afternoon.  I don't regret for a minute moving here, it's such a blessing (and HUGE money saver) to have Sloane in the care of her family all day long.

Speaking of family...we have been working like fiends on Taylor's baby's nursery (wait til you see the before and after shots, it's unreal).  Everyone is goading her to choose a name, she is having as hard of a time as we did.    I don't think he will have a name until he is out of the womb and into the world.

And this is coming up soon....

designed by Kate at grey square design on Etsy (she's delightful!)

Crazy weekend, I jetted to Lawrence on Friday for Whitney's surprise 32nd birthday party (her husband is a gem, she was so surprised she cried).  On Saturday we hung out and watched KU beat Mizzou (hooray!) and Sunday brought our favorite day...the Academy Awards. I was tickled for my favorite actress evah-- Meryl (although I wanted Viola to win so much too-- definitely the best category this year).  I am slowly (much more slowly than usual, pre-baby) working my way through the nominees.  We are slated to see The Artist (art cinema) this week and My Week with Marilyn (art cinema) and The Girl with The Dragon Tattoo (red box) next week, I believe Hugo will come out soon as well.

Oscar baby 2012
Who did you think looked smashing? I loved Viola's green gown and her natural hair!  She is seriously gorgeous, she looked like a total movie star.  Green on the red carpet is always a winner with me.

via
I did not care for Angelina's look at all.  She was so posey.  She totally ruined her aloof image.  She should be the kind of star that you should say-- "is that a slit in her dress?" in that mysterious give-me-more way.  Instead she looked so vampy.  Ick. Plus she does not look too skinny-- she looks like a SKELETON.  Seriously, this is honestly a medical problem.  It doesn't help her to be on all the best-dressed lists-- she needs help.

Also this coming weekend--a swimming party, even though appearing in a bathing suit before losing all the baby weight is against my religion...I will be going to celebrate a special day for my favorite family.  And these two little guys:

4 years old, can it be?

Mr. Quinn one year ago
photo by David (daddy)...look how gorgeous Bre is minutes after giving birth.  that should be illegal people.
Someday soon I will be able to breathe again.  I believe this, I do.

surprise surprise, another pair of lips and eyes

My sister is due in early May and she had a sonogram where she found out the gender in December.  She wanted to reveal it to our big family at the same time, so we came up with this idea, using a couple of ideas from the net. We all got together on Christmas eve and she did the reveal then.

Everyone had to wear a ribbon indicating their guess.  Pink for girl, blue for boy-- a little dated I know but easy to interpret.

I think I subconsciously thought it was a girl as the pink ribbons far outnumber the blue

my mama made these cupcakes so we could all take a bite and reveal the surprise at the same time

It's a boy!  Hooray!
Mom made the cupcakes by reserving one third of the batter and dying it blue.  Then you use a small cookie scoop to place a small dollop of the colored batter in the middle of the white batter.  Then frost as usual.

So excited for a nephew!  Let the nursery painting and decorating begin.

you can't please everyone so you gotta please yourself

OK so I started to feel like a real hypocrite trying to get parents of children with autism who I work with to tow the line with their children when I go home and get manipulated by a tiny drooling baldy myself.
MOM!  I need you...you and I are ONE!

Sloane had been stretching out the night routine of holding and rocking for well over an hour and then was still sleeping poorly after that waking up to nurse numerous times a night and not sleeping well unless she was in bed with me.  I had to draw the line and I wanted to draw it before she could crawl out of her crib (she already pulls herself up and stands there).  Enter Dr. Ferber's Solve Your Child’s Sleep Problems (revised 2006 edition).

I wanted to be one of those awesome Dr. Sears (author of, Nighttime Parenting: How to Get Your Baby and Child to Sleep, The Attachment Parenting Book, and The Baby Book, among several others-- like that highly controversial Vaccine Book) moms all the way.  But in all honesty my sanity was suffering.  I haven't slept for longer than 4 hours in almost 1 year. And frankly, Dr. Sears method was awesome for my preemie, for my newborn, for my infant...but for my emerging toddler it wasn't working.

This is one of those topics. You know the ones, the ones that start mom wars and mompetition (see also bottle or breast, private or public, stay at home or work outside the home, cloth or disposable, vaccinate or not, etc ad nauseum.

Immediately when I read the Ferber method the scientific language appealed to me i.e. "gradual extinction".  It also sparked my interest in the area of separation anxiety.  Part of the reason I keep Sloane with me so often is that I can't bear not to nurse her, hold her, sleep next to her because she is SO anxious, after I read the book I began to see this anxiety from a separate viewpoint.

Ferber asserts that Sloane needs to see her and I as two separate people and the nursing and sleeping relationship (that we have) may be hindering that and that she needs my help to learn that gently (although that does involve some tears, which hurts).  Also I had the "cry-it-out" fears in my head, that I was just going to have to close the door and not open it til morning.  But gradual extinction involves leaving her for longer periods of time and going in frequently (and fading that) to reassure her that I am still there (easing the separation anxiety and feeling of abandonment).  I liked that part because my other worry was "what if she is crying for a reason?" (my mind goes right to the craziest most unlikely scenario: kidnapper).

Also I wasn't sure that I should continue night nursing (upwards to 6 times a night!).  Ferber has a way in his book to continue but I found that it might be too confusing for her (since she does not understand time she would not understand why sometimes I come in and pick her up to nurse and other times I come in only to comfort her briefly).  She is not nursing for nutrition at night she is nursing to comfort herself and have herself drift back to sleep.

She does not seem to have "shut down syndrome" as Sears cautions in his Sleep Book   (the reason I have tried to avoid any and all tears for eleven months, which is frankly exhausting) although it's only been 2 days of this method.  She did not cry at all for naps today.  She snuggled in to me and I said "it's nap time." took her to her bed and laid her down.  She gave me an anxious look and I reassured her that I would see her in the afternoon.  She rolled over quietly and closed her eyes.  This.is.huge.

For us this is working, now.  I fully expect that no one method is a cure all.

And now, something non-controversial....

how cute am I?

And a series of shots of Sloane and her cousin (14 month old) Kolten....

It's my niece's first day of Kindergarten.  I can remember her tight little fists balled up by her face the first time I held her almost 6 years ago.  She's so excited to start school.  Such a big kid! Just love getting to see the person she's becoming.

here's wishing you the bluest skies.

I've had a little creative time lately and am trying to savor it because I don't know when I will get any for awhile because we are moving!  YAY.  The job that I mentioned in my previous post called me and offered me a position.

We love Kansas City (and will miss the people here & close by more than anything) but are ready to make the jump into a different life for our family.  Thank you all for your positive vibes, words and encouragement.  I have no doubt that you made a difference in the situation.  I will be working for about a year and hope to launch my own business (a creative arts centered childcare center--complete with a drama therapist: me) next year.

It's time to write our goodbye letter to Kansas City, we are about to start a new chapter!

We read a little prayer out of one of Sloane's book every night: Bedtime Prayers by Bonnie Rickner Jenning.  My friend Dustin's family and friends have been on my heart and in my prayers all day today, as I handed the book to Keenan to choose the prayer he flipped it open and it fell to this perfectly appropriate prayer: "The Shepard knows that we need help to get us through our days.  He's faithful to encourage us in big and little ways.  He sends a friend to cheer us on or lend a helping hand.  And when we feel like giving up, He'll be our strenth to stand!  Dear God, thank You for giving me paitence and encouragement."

My heart swelled as Keenan read this to our daughter.  Just the words I needed to hear.

The book also puts a little Bible verse (in little words) for tonight it was Romans 15:5...Which is "May the God who gives endurance and encouragement give you a spirit of unity among yourselves as you follow Jesus."  So be it.

For every kiss your beauty trumped my doubt

Today is my due date. I wonder what I would have been like had I actually reached it.

Until only a few days ago I was still harboring a lot (95%) of negative feelings about Sloane's birth and the experience we had. I have been working to move past this and only focus on the fact that she is here and healthy now. Some people have even wondered what my hang up is, why I can't move past December 14th. The answer is I'm not really sure. But as a therapist I know that you cannot simply gloss over something traumatic (even if the trauma resulted in a good outcome...i.e. my sister was very lucky to survive complications of her tonsilectomy, which was 1 week after Sloane was born, she is fine now, but she coded 3 times and she cannot get the nightmares to alleviate). Trauma doesn't just evaporate.

However, as I work through my heart's feelings more light is visible all the time. Today a happy little thought occurred to me.

Today is my due date, Sloane, you may have come full term and been totally healthy and I would not have as great of a fear of what neurological challenges you may have ahead of you, I would not have the most intense fear of asthma and breathing...but I would not have known you yet. Instead I got an extra 5 weeks of really knowing you and loving you. I cannot say I would not trade the time, I am not at that point, but I can say that I am grateful for this.

And if your strife strikes at your sleep
Remember spring swaps snow for leaves
You'll be happy and wholesome again
When the city clears and sun ascends

take a message to your head.

Happy 2nd Birthday Tiernan!

Last weekend was so lovely, full of all the things I love- cozy little parties, my family, my bff Bre & Maxx, watching Tay dance, KW wins, my nephew turned 2, McDaniels was fired, and my mom made cake!

I thought I was moving along the to-do list slowly, then I got sick and I realized I could be even slower. It's just a cold, all I need is rest (and massive amounts of fluid, and Mucinex). This is a problem: I think I could win an award for the "worst rest-er". I have always been like this-- never wanting to "waste" a minute, it's worse now. With every labor-prep my body makes (and there are a lot of little things no one tells you, and I am not going to start- because frankly, some of them are gross) my mind revvs up even more.

Luckily I've been sipping on an entire gallon of "red hot tea" one of my grammy's best recipes for sore throats (it's essentially water, red hot candies, orange juice and lemonade concentrate, and you drink it hot, oh so soothing). It seems a bit cruel that the only mug that was clean this morning was the one that says "Irish Coffee" on it, which only makes me crave a good Baileys and cocoa and maybe a bloody Mary even more. Sigh. Such is life.

Also looking forward to this weekend, having a shower with my girlfriends from high school and then God bless them one and all, they are coming over to help me assemble my nursery. That's such a breath of oxygen (the kind I used to be able to get to fill up my whole right and left lungs before my lungs were squished to the size of a small asthmatic cat).

I did however get a few things crossed off the to-do list this week. Insurance is a go! (major heart attack avoided) Thank-you notes are half-way done, Holiday cards are out, and half of lima's little 0-3 month clothes and blankies and towels are laundered.

Hopefully after this weekend I can check a few more things off the list. Stay put a little longer little girl!

words are not enough to tell you of our love, so listen to our hearts

I was watching the View a few months ago and Vanessa Redgrave was on talking about the death of her sister Lynn Redgrave and the loss of her daughter Natasha Richardson. It was so apparent that she was in the throws of life and they asked her how she was doing and she said she was "grieving and glorying"
When you lost people you absolutely love and adore, you're both glorying and you're grieving," Redgrave said. "You're grieving because you haven't got them anymore and you're glorying because you're taking in what a gift each of them was."

This concept stuck with me. Because the more I age the more I realize how loss is a part of gain. Death is intregal to life. It seems like a simple concept, although feeling it is not simple.

I feel that I am in the midst of much grieving and glorying.

I tearfully said goodbye to my grandpa on Monday evening Aug 24. I am ever thankful that I have gotten to have "last" conversations with both him and my grammy G whom I lost last year. 30 years of memories were washing over me and I have decided that 30 years doesn't make it any easier or more comforting. It hurts to know that for 30 years you've had his ear and quiet raspy advice and now that part of your life is gone.

I rushed back to Kansas City for my ultrasound on Tuesday morning Aug 25th where Keenan and I learned, joyfully, that we are having a baby girl. I imagine that if my grandpa could have spoken at the time we found out, he would have said "well I'll declare!"

The next afternoon my grandpa earned his rest from fighting cancer.

Eldon A. Rietzke

Eldon Arnold Rietzke, 89, of Salina, went to be with his Lord on the afternoon of Wednesday, Aug. 25, 2010. He was born July 16, 1921, in Kensington, the son of Charles and Mathilde Rietzke. The youngest of seven children, he was raised on the family farm near Kensington.

In 1939, Eldon graduated from Agra High School. He then earned a degree in education from Fort Hays State College in Hays and taught for three years at Norton School, a one-room school in rural Smith County. He later owned Rietzke Supermarket & Dry Goods in Kensington for 30 years, where he was known as the best butcher in town.

Eldon fell in love with a beautiful girl he met on a blind date, Dorene Prior. The two were married in 1950 at the Hutchinson Church of Christ by H.W. Prior, Dorene's father. They were blessed with three children, Tim, Tracy and Jill.

Following a move to Salina, Eldon continued as a butcher at Beverly's Meat Market and Waymire's Meat Market for many years. His most recent job was with Nabisco.

Eldon, along with his wife, Dorene, raised his children with strong Christian values. He was baptized in September of 1980 and humbly served as a deacon at Salina Church of Christ. Eldon loved his family, the church, gardening, golf, bowling and sports. He loved being with his children and grandchildren and watching all of their activities.

Eldon was preceded in death by his parents, three brothers and three sisters.

He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Dorene; two sons and daughters-in-law, Tim and Marilyn, of Coldwater, and Tracy and Cindy, of Kansas City, Kan.; a daughter and son-in-law, Jill and Randy, of Mentor; 11 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

After the funeral was over and I came back to Kansas City, I got joyful news again Weds Sept 1st my nephew Kolten Paul came into the world healthy and happy!

Grieving and glorying...onward.

if you're gonna walk on water, could you drop a line my way?

water babies Tiernan & Brielle

Hoping to get creative for awhile today. Need to get to scrapping. Moving on August 31st, so packing will begin soon and I know I will feel an itch once everything is packed up. Also should sort through the crafty-things. So many ideas so little time (err...motivation).

If only I had this much energy...

pass the tea & sympathy.

Photos are from when Minda, Bre & Maxx came to Kansas City this last weekend. We had a great time. After they all left on Friday evening when I made an awful discovery...my cold (which I've had for 20 days) had suddenly gotten much worse. It worsened even more throughout the weekend putting a damper on a visit from my mom, Randy and my grandparents.

Today, tired of being miserable, I hit up Minute Clinic, after I tried to get into my regular doctor whom I can see on Thursday (!). So I cancelled the Thursday gig and headed over to CVS. I have a sinus infection, which I expected. I get one every fall and every spring.

The ARNP told me I could prevent them with those nasal rinses. I must have looked terrified. She told me they are a little weird but they prevent and treat infections. She told me to buy one.
I confessed my biggest fear is water and drowning. If a little water goes up my nose when washing my face I freak.

She told me it would make me feel better much faster, maybe even today! To a person in pain, that promise is dirty pool. I bought one. And I freaked.

Once when I was a child, around 5, I had to have ear drops for an infection. I did not take well to them. My dad had to hold me down while my mom put them in. I threatened (idly) to call 911 and report him for child abuse. Thus, from then on my mother told pediatricians I would rather just have the anti-biotic. The doctor would then tell her that the drops work faster and numb the pain. I would then tell the doctor I would just have the pain, please.

This time I am going to try to make a concerted effort. I may have wanted to take the pain then, but I am all about getting rid of it now.

Looking at a green sky, sun like a red-eye

I made this strawberry jam last night. It's the real deal. And it smells so delicious when it's cooking. Find myself trying all sorts of new things in the kitchen lately...besides thrifting it's my way to deal.

Speaking of thrifting I got an adorably current Vera Bradley (according to the website it retails for 48$) hanging make-up bag (2.99) and a couple cute girl-cut Kansas State t-shirts (1.99). Great way to end my thrift adventures this week, of course I won't be able to resist going on Monday to the 50% off sale. And why should I resist?

I miss these two!

and recent endeavors in scrapbooking...

this was exactly one year ago, keenan got on a bus for NY and the "long distance" part of our relationship began.

Brielle is 3!

In other news, I have replaced my sparkplugs, a negative battery cable, front brake pads, and one tire within about 4 weeks and now there is something wrong with my power locks. I was also rear-ended at a red light. I am thinking my car hates me.

I don't have a picture, but the Twilight series has also deliciously, and ridiculously stolen many hours of my life lately. I am dragging through Breaking Dawn, only because I want to make it last, since it's the end...yes I am that pathetic.

My design team term is over soon on Tallyscrapper, while I am sad to see it over, I will enjoy a little time off-line occasionally.

Work is going well...I downloaded the application for registry to become a registered drama therapist...so I can be Shan, RDT. And suddenly I am remembering this video we watched in grad school about the nightmare of registry and it is becoming real. And I am setting up phone dates w/ my mama hen already and hoping for the best. I will send it in officially in March. I am hoping by starting now I can avoid the holiday doldrums, hey it might even snap me out of my personal doldrum.

Still cooking and baking to avoid stress. I am getting pretty good, and if my car continues to breakdown, I am sure I will get even better. Last night was garlic mashed potatoes, banana bread and lemon butter chicken. This weekend was baked rosemary chicken, mashed potatoes and fudge brownies. I think cupcakes are on the slate for this weekend, as well as chili (with ground turkey, of course) on Sunday. I am not sure about the rest of the week yet.

I am 2-0 in both my fantasy FB leagues and my Broncos are 2-0, so FB is so far, so good. Can't wait to see some in person.

And now that I have bored you to death, I am off, probably to bake or cook.
