they are happy as they sing that old, sweet song
When I have too much on my heart I simply can't write blog posts. However there are so many words that it seems alien to fall silent. But instead of talking or writing I spent a lot of the last 10 days holding these hands.
I have always loved my grandmother's hands for all the comfort and sweetness they have given me for the past 32 years, heck I even thought her age and sun spots were pretty, as I viewed them as a young girl as freckles. It was time to give a little of that back to her.
My grandmother left this earth at midnight Friday. For the last ten days of her life she has rested peacefully in hospice surrounded by children, grandchildren, cousins, a sister, nieces, and friends murmuring their love for her. Until 10pm on Thursday she let us know she loved us with her eyes and tried to answer us when we told her we loved her.
I already miss her sweet voice.
But I know that she is ecstatic to be alongside the love of her life again. And I will see her again one day.

but you go on
Oh October, you always grab me and shake me and tear me open. October has been a month (since 2001) that has meant so many joyful and heartwrenching things to me that it is difficult for my brain to sort out all that my heart feels.
I am never sad to see it go.
My best friend and I were recently having a discussion about October, and if it would be a good time to have a baby. She remarked that it wouldn't because the baby would be born on my exhusbands birthday (with my luck). But I said that it would. No matter what, I am so conflicted about October. I try to add happy occassions back into the month that has an opal as it's talisman.
Fall, my favorite season.
One of the best months in 2000 when my college boyfriend spent tons of time with me in a tiny apartment on the top floor of a house on Bluemont street
blueberry muffins and carmel lattes at Java
The song "This time of year" by Better than Ezra
political campaigning
sweet & sassy Mindy Reese
The song "Ghost" by the Indigo Girls
Annika Noelle
extravagant gifts and celebrations and surprises I would plan for my (eventual) exhusband
the year that Breann and I made the fairy costumes
meeting K
my play was born
Rocky Horror Picture Show
taking maternity photos in st. joseph at krug park with the leaves in my hair
Spaghetti Sloane
our wedding
You'd think that would be the ultimate trump card. One of happiest days of my life...but it will take a lifetime of more happy things, until then I will just keep adding them one by one.

take the way home that leads back to Sullivan Street
I think that my friend leaving this world on May day (2 years ago) is poignantly fitting. "Mayday" is the call of distress from a ship or a plane...it comes from the French "m'aidez," or "help me". When repeated three times on a radio frequency, "Mayday" signifies grave and imminent danger.
May day indeed.
I think my grief in someways for this loss has intensified since becoming a mother. This is in part because I have grown so close to Dustin's father over the past 11 years. Even after a scant 16 months with my child I don't want to think about being without her here on earth.
28 years must have felt just like a blink. There cannot be time long enough when it comes to the life of your child.
As for me there are "things I remember and things I forget, I miss you, I guess that I should." (Raining in Baltimore).
What I remember so vividly...
what your voice sounded like -- the cadence of it. especially the way you told me to "chill babe"
how you did things in order to push my buttons-- like insisting the scene in American Beauty that made it Oscar-worthy was the video of that stupid plastic bag that the emo boyfriend videotaped. Now that you're gone every time I see a plastic bag fly by I think of you. I notice them when I need to see them most. I ate lunch with your dad and friends today and behind us on our walk to our car flew a grey plastic bag.
your hair-brained schemes
your love of music, there are some artists and songs that make me think only of you because we played them in your car together, and then I played them for you in your hospital room (The Smashing Pumpkins Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness double album--especially Spaceboy, Better than Ezra-- this time of year, Dave Matthews Band---Live at Red Rocks album, Under the Table and Dreaming album, and their song Crush, Counting Crows -- Sullivan Street it makes me think of all the times I left your house on Simmons street late at night to go home, and of course Rufus Wainwright's version of Hallejuah breaks my heart.)
how you made me feel important when you spoke to me (you apparently did this for TONS of people--that's pretty amazing)
blueberry muffins---it was a piece of your memory you got back, something I was sure was insignificant and you would have forgotten it anyway... It was from the last time you had come to see me in Manhattan about a month before your car accident. We went out for coffee at breakfast and I wanted you to try one of the muffins, they were wonderful but they were out that day.but one of the times I saw you later on, after we were not together you told me "you were mad they were out of blueberry muffins." It absolutely slayed me. Cut me to the quick.
how you hated celery-- you told me that if you looked at it you'd throw up you made it seem more like a phobia than a taste. the thought of this cracked me up and I always planned to have a bag of celery in my fridge when you would go poking through it, but I never did it.
how you bought cards for occassions other than what was happening. I have 3 of such cards from you-- one of them says "Congratulations on your baby boy!" (it was for a "break a leg") Happy Birthday (just because in September) and one about the loss of a pet (when you were leaving for the week back to Emporia).
you were basically wonderful.

beneath this bold and brilliant sun
I took Sloane to the pumpkin patch on Sunday. It was so fun to see it through her eyes. She was captivated by two giant Clydesdale's who were pulling a hay rack ride and she waved at them and danced the the clomping of their hooves on the gravel. We cut our own pumpkins from a giant patch. We picked a big one for daddy, a pretty white one for me and a funny little one for Sloane.
Fall is here. The weather is crisp and cool and therefore the migraines are here. I love fall except for the constant change in barometric pressure that is happening every day. A good hard freeze helps my sinuses and my headaches.
Busy planning Sloane's Halloween costume and first birthday and still unpacking and arranging the new place. Of course I do all this planning by pining over projects on Pinterest. (Blergh I am SO blissfully addicted).
Anxious for the weekend already and it's only Tuesday!
I have put myself on a craft/DIY moratorium. I am not allowed to buy another thing that I will somehow "fix" "alter" "paint" or otherwise change until I finish one of the half dozen projects I already have going...
I have ordered a couple of goodies from Etsy lately...
and in other news inside my mind...

as you sleep: Sloane's nursery tour
Dear Sloane,
It's hard to say good bye to the nursery we brought you home to...I've wanted to post about all the little things in your room for a long time now. Lucky me, Jenna took photos of some of the little details when she was over for your 6 month photos. I spent a lot of time before you were born trying to make every detail lovely for you and to make it affordable. I am happy about how it turned out. I hope when you look back at the photos you are too.

a memory so clear it's as if you're still before me

Of all the money that ere I had, I spent it in good company.Every narrative has a backstory. Last Friday I attended a funeral for someone with whom I had quite a backstory.
And of all the harm that ere I've done, alas was done to none but me.
And all I've done for want of wit, to mem'ry now I cannot recall.
So fill me to the parting glass. Goodnight and joy be with you all.
Of all the comrades that ere I had, they're sorry for my going away,
And all the sweethearts that ere I had , would wish me one more day to stay,
But since it falls unto my lot that I should rise while you should not,
I will gently rise and I'll softly call: "Goodnight and joy be with you all" -The Parting Glass
Fare thee well my bright star, I watched your taillights blaze into nothingness - E. Sailers
This is from something I wrote four years ago...
On December the 5th (which was a Wednesday) 2000 my boyfriend got into a car accident...that claimed our relationship and his old life...
I was almost 21 and he was 19.
Dustin was effortless. He was fluid. Everyone wanted to be his friend. He made you feel like you were the only one in the world when he was talking to you. And he was caustically funny.
Not only people loved him, the stage loved him as well. He was an amazing actor, I remember the first time I saw him onstage. He was 16 and I was 19 & in-love. He was the lead (Eugene) in Brighton Beach Memoirs...lines upon lines upon lines, flawless delivery-ultimate believability.
I told him later once we began dating, in a way that I thought was sweepingly romantic that I had fallen in love with him that night. I was expecting him to say something equally romantic. Instead he said quietly in my ear “pervert”.
He had a way.
He had a ton of friends. He was always on his cell phone. He was gorgeous and attentive and fun as hell. One time we got lost on our way home from a play at Emporia State, we ended up in a small town in KS neither of us had been to. He gets out of the car and goes into a local bingo hall, not to ask directions, but to get a little old lady to take our picture, because we'd “never been to Olpe Kansas before.”
The night he planned to come and see me I was in a bad mood. I was stressed because it was almost finals and Dustin never took schoolwork seriously. He just wanted to spread his arms and fly.
He habitually drove too fast, because he was always a few minutes late. And his skin was always a few degrees warmer than mine. He ran hot.
He didn't have an ID...this was because a year back he had tried to make it into a fake ID and failed, so the hologram busted the whole ID. So he had never gotten around to getting a new DL. I had left my wallet in his car over Thanksgiving break. I left it on the floorboard of the passenger side of his white brand new Honda Accord. It was my black K-State bi-fold wallet.
He was just going to drive the hour drive to see me, spend the night, and return my wallet. Even though I was grouchy when he called, he told me that he wanted to see me, told me he loved me and would see me soon. He was on the road.
My exit is #303. He called me on his cell phone. He was at exit #277. That was the last time he talked to me. He said it was beginning to snow and was getting slick. I said “slow down” he said “Chill babe, love you”. I fell asleep waiting for him (this seems strange to me now, now that I am riddled by anxiety when anyone I care about is late to anything).
I woke up to the phone. It was late. I thought "here he is telling me he ran into a friend at the gas station in town and he'll be over in a bit." it was Srgt. Burgess of the highway patrol. He told me that they'd found an unidentified accident victim with my ID, did I know who it was. His accident was at exit 295. I said "is he okay?" Srg. Burgess said he didn't know, but it was the way he said it that told me another story.
Numb. I answered questions on auto-pilot, told them how to get a hold of Glen, told them his birthdate, and his name. I called my 2 best gf's, Amanda and Jessica that went to school with me. They drove me to exit 295, to the hospital that Dustin was at. I called my parents. They came to get me, to take me half way across the state where they would be air-lifting my boyfriend to. He wasn't conscious. He was in awful shape. He might not live.
They gave me Valium.
I cried to a respiratory tech who was about 25 years old with a tongue ring until he finally let me see him just for a second, he told me I could walk beside him to the helicopter. He was wrapped up in a bright blue sleeping bag. That was the last time I saw him...him when he looked like "himself". I tried not to cry. I told him that I loved him. I remember telling him that they had him locked up tighter than a government secret. I told him he'd be okay.
They gave me a bag. It had his clothes, they were a mess and had been cut off of him. He was wearing the outfit I'd given him for his birthday exactly a month prior. It also had his wallet and his cell phone.
Even to this day, I think about that. He listened to his grouchy girlfriend, put on the outfit she just bought him and went to cheer her up, spend a little bit of time with her. This to me is sweepingly romantic. And unfortunately poignant.
My step-dad took me home to Salina. My mom then drove me to Wichita. I skipped my final exams. I have my one and only ‘F’ of my educational career for that experience. When I was asked about this grade in the grad school interview I thought it sounded to bizarre to explain, so I just lied and said someone in my family died. It didn’t sound real to me and I lived it.
They kept me sedated. Not so sedate that I didn't cry though. There were many tears. I just wanted him to wake up.
He had traumatic brain injury, he had broken bones, a collapsed lung, a rupturing spleen....cuts bruises. He wasn't wearing his seatbelt. I was irate when I was informed of this, then I realized the futility of being angry.
Surgeries...surgeries....almosts and not quites. He was in a medical induced coma for 3 months...and then he didn't wake up for 3 more. When he did wake up he couldn't speak, or walk...or remember.
I stayed in Wichita until spring semester started, and after that I would drive up nearly every weekend and stay until I had to return for class (I only took 2 classes that sememster and they were both on Tuesday and Thursday). Finally they could move him from SICU to the regular floor, it was bliss because we could visit him more. And it meant he was getting better. I just wanted him to wake up.
Before he really did wake up he was in this half-awake state. He was agitated. He lost tons of weight. He would lay in his hospital bed and thrash violently from side to side. He looked skinny and awful and blank.
They told me he'd never really wake up. There was a speech pathologist who came in briefly one day (very briefly) when he was in this quasi-conscious state. The SLP came up to his gaze and told him to say "ahhh". Dustin did not respond. He tried a few more vowel sound instructions. Dustin did not respond. Then he promptly announced in front of his patient, myself and Dustin's father Glen: "He cannot speak."
I was an undergraduate student majoring in Speech Pathology. I had just taken Anatomy of the Speech Mechanism. My free time in college was spent in the speech lab watching therapists work with stroke victims and kiddos with speech problems. I knew from all of that, that vowel sounds are some of the most complex sounds. I told both Dustin and Glen that the guy was ridiculous.
So for days and days I worked with Dustin. Glen would sit in the back of the room and read. His mom would comb his hair and I would work with him to move his lips. One weekend when Glen was at the corner of the room in the easy chair I was working Dustin again. He might have been annoyed that I would never leave him alone, but that day he mouthed "I love you" clear as daylight to me. Our hearts began to swell with hope and joy. And again, they moved him. This time to a rehabilitation center. This really meant he was getting better!
Dustin woke up, for real at spring break of that year of college. He could talk. He remembered bits and pieces of everything. He remembered me, he gathered that I was his girlfriend, that I loved him...He couldn't remember "us" though, not really.
He had trouble with his short term memory. I'd leave the room to go to the bathroom and have to retell him everything. He was depressed, emotional and unsure of himself. He couldn't remember me, at least not as his girlfriend. One day he asked me "Did I love you?" Nothing has ever stung like that.
When someone dies you know right away, when a part of someone dies it's different. There was this person, living in my boyfriend’s body, with his voice...and yet I didn't know him and he didn't know me. And I didn't know what to do with that.
And so it is. It was the worst feeling I've ever had to break off the relationship. And all this time I have not wanted to fall in love quite like that again.
And I feel guilty. I feel like it's my fault. Still after 6 years. I am so sad and feel so responsible. Even though it's illogical. Even though I would tell my own client that it wasn't their fault. I didn't make him come, in fact I asked him not to. I didn't make it snow.
I hate that our relationship became defined by the accident. There was so much joy before that. He called me “sweets”. He was basically wonderful. We loved each other. He taught me more than I can put into words and he introduced some wonderful people into my life.
fare thee well my bright starAfter the funeral I couldn't bear to change clothes, because I had the strongest urge to drive to Wichita to a hospital. I was stuck in a moment, but I was in the wrong place. It was 1 am before I got the feeling to subside, but only for awhile. It all feels wrong.
the vanity of youth the color of your eyes
maybe if I'd fanned the blazing fire of your day to day
or if I'd been older I'd been wise - E. Sailers
Part of what helped me a little was to hear wonderful things about Dustin. He went back to acting, only 3 years after his accident. He also found love and got married. This truly made me happy. So when I heard through the social networking grapevine that he was struggling with depression and then that he had taken his life it seems like it had to be someone else. That once again, he will wake up and beat the odds. One breath after I think that, I realize it's not true this time. It's also as though I don't know what is present and what is past at times.
So I found myself at a funeral for a man, who in part, I had lost almost 10 years ago. I found myself wondering that if I let myself feel my feelings I would be somehow invalidating other people's feelings. Or that I was in someway invalidating his last 10 years.
It wasn't that at all, it is all valid. For each of us, no matter what part of Dustin we loved: the before, the after, the inbetween, and now. So instead of fretting I am trying hard to remember all the times he told me to relax. I am trying hard not to apologize for feeling this way. I am trying hard.
fare thee well my bright starIf you read this all, whew... thank you (and you should rest your eyes for awhile & forgive my subject-verb agreement and possibly tenses of verbs), I needed to say it and this was the place I felt it was most appropriate.
it was a brief brilliant miracle dive
that which I looked up to and I clung to for dear life
had to burn itself up just to make itself alive
I caught you then in your moment of glory
your last dramatic scene against a night sky stage
with a memory so clear it's as if you're still before me

let's waste time chasing cars around our heads
I unearthed this note...and began thinking about the immortality of the love note (even after the love is gone). I tend to get rid of pictures, but notes find their way into a box of pictures, or stapled to the page of a journal. This one is one of my favorites.
"Dear Shannon, You were getting boring before I discovered all of your maddening imperfections that make you impossibly complex and unendingly intriguing."
I am pretty sure that now he just thinks I am a jerk. But the note still makes me smile a little.
Do you keep these little immortals, or get rid of all the evidence?

broke into the old apartment
"When we die, we will turn into songs, and we will hear each other and remember each other." Rob Sheffield: Love is a Mix Tape
A combination of things that brought this post up.
1. My friend at work told me that she is loaning me Love is a Mix Tape. She knows how I have a healthy respect for melancholy.
2. I got a new bookcase and am filling it up, when searching through books in boxes to add to the shelf I found my journals (1999-2007).
3. Keenan was at work and I was bored and began to read about my past from my past-POV.
When I read through my journals I realized that a blog just isn't the same. I have always kept a pen and paper journal and I loved to staple little bits of artwork, love notes, newspaper articles, horoscopes, fortune cookie fortunes, photos and song lyrics into them.
One of my journals has the backs of postcards and envelopes that are full of song lists for mix cds that I made my best friend Bre (during our long distance relationship).
Then I found it within the pages...a list, a rather comprehensive list of songs organized by relationship and time in my life. Break up anthems and love manifestos all in lyrical form...This is the kind of thing I love to look back on, and giggle. Did I really take everything so seriously? Yes.
So I decided to dedicate a post to it and a few weeks of the playlist to it.

blue eyes on a saturday night

Glad I got to spend a little time in my hometown with some of my best girls this weekend (& my highschool sweetheart). This next few weeks of work is going to be murderous and I am going to have to revisit this weeknd in my mind quite a few times to get through it without greying my hair. (Is greying a word? Can it be used as a verb?)
It was really nice to spend some time where I come from. Things are quite different here in the bigger city, and although I love it here, I sometimes miss that hometown feeling.

caught in between all you wish for and all you need
So there is this "photoless challenge" over at Tallyscrapper. And as I was surfing around I got a lot of inspiration from one of the efferdares and the dare itself. So here is my take. Lots of people have them: failed relationships, "the one who got away", heartbreak, etc. Here is mine. It scanned a little wonky because of the little "love" button. Made it a little crooked and a little blurry.
The scrapping has been crazy lately! I moved my stuff into the living room (temporarily, because the spare room is FREEZING) in front of the big screen. And somehow now I am unstoppable.

With me riding in this car, and you flying through the clouds
It's time again, to get motivated to create with Category Stories. The prompt this month is: "If I had a time machine". I chose to scrap about my lovely Grammy. All the pretties on this layout do not reflect my usual style, but they reflect my Grandma and how she made others feel. Also the little pearl flower (thanks Ashley) made it hard to scan so it turned out a little blurry.

they give you your very own pair of wings...

The roaring twenties are coming to a screeching halt...actually I am going out of my twenties as gently as I came into them. I thought it would be interesting to look back on the last decade of my life as I brace to begin the next one...
People have been doing these posts on their blogs (like the lovely Kara) about what they are loving/not loving, listening to, reading, etc...I thought I'd take my own spin on that and do a list from my 20's.
A list from my twenties (or "What the heck was I...")
Reading:
I remember feeling like I was on-fire reading this book well into the night and early morning of 2004. It's still one of my top 5: The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-time by Mark Haddon.
Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close by Jonathan Safran Foer, read in 2008...I am as in love with Oscar as a narrator as I am with Scout (To Kill a Mockingbird).
I read the Twilight series in 2009 and it catapulted me back into the feverish type of reading for pleasure that I needed post grad school. (Plus they were pure unadulterated fun).
I also read a slew of Women's Studies books in my early twenties while I was struggling to define how I felt personally and politically when it comes to being a gal. My favorite to this day is Sister Outsider, by Audre Lorde, specifically The Transformation of Silence essay.
Listening to:
I am more than a little boring when it comes to music I suppose. This is mainly because I can listen to the same album for an entire decade if I like it. My tastes are rock solid, they don't change. The artists that I've loved throughout my 20's were (are)
The Counting Crows (I saw them in concert twice in my 20s, This Desert Life & Hard Candy tour...in St. Louis both time)
Ani Difranco -- moreso in my earlier 20s, but even now
Patty Griffin (she is going to be like the crows and be a forever-type of love)
I loved listening to K's Choice, when I would take long spring afternoon naps as a college freshman at Cloud County and in my dorm room at KSU as a sophomore, and Dashboard Confessionals spent a lot of time on my car cd player during grad school.
Quirky soundtracks: Clueless, Elizabethtown, Garden State, In Good Company, (500) days of Summer
New things toward the end of the decade are Missy Higgins, Kate Nash, Regina Spektor & Rufus Wainwright & Ryan Adams
Thinking: things that rocked my world (in a loosely time-specific order & completely honest fashion):
my first "heartbreak", that awful 2000 election, a terrible car accident, my 21st b-day, losing my uncle Dave, Annika, Georgia the dog, getting close to my sister, 9/11, co-organizing a peace rally, when Mindy died, my 22nd b-day, my 23rd b-day, getting my bachelors degree, Bre moves to Salina, my 24th b-day, going to the Broncos game in Denver for Monday night FB where the slaughtered the KC Cheifs, my 25th b-day, getting engaged & then married, my 26th b-day, my first niece, starting a blog, writing a play, my divorce, my friends beautiful marriages, the tragic deaths of two of my hs classmates, going brunette going to graduate school, meeting Martha, Jemmie, Lisa & Sarah (among others), producing the play I wrote, my 27th birthday, my friends beautiful babies (Haley, Kaden, Brie, Adam, Greyson, Hannah) getting my masters degree, meeting keenan, the tour, my 28th b-day, Philly, Maxx, Vegas, moving to kansas city, the election of Barack Obama, my 29th b-day, going to NYC, losing my Grammy, earning my RDT, getting close to my dad, my first nephew, my grandpa being dx'd with terminal cancer, cutting bangs, still leaning on Kate, Whit, Em, Nellie & Bran as much as when I was 18...
Desperately Wanting (all that stuff I had to have):
President's Honor Roll, a camera, new running shoes, scrapbook supplies, a computer, Bogey's cheesecake shakes, Chipotle veggie burrito bowls, a cell phone, a new car, a big love, a raincoat, a phone call, a career, time with my family, a 4.0 GPA, Willow Tree angels, things emblazoned with my initial, things emblazoned with Bre's initial, anything with Audrey Hepburn on it, good water pressure, hot boyfriend, girlfriend time, planning the perfect baby shower for friends, Cadbury Dairy Milk Chocolate, a vacation, books, empathy, smart boyfriend, a puppy, a laptop, the right words, a new digital camera, Autism Awareness, an IPOD, owls, new running shoes, sweet husband, little baby, beautiful career, being published, time with my family, compassion, a newer car, cupcakes, consideration, as ever, world peace...
Watching on the small screen:

Loving on the big screen:

here's wishing you the bluest skies
So, every year since I can remember I have journaled (usually on paper) about the best and the worst of each year...I thought a few years ago I would start doing a lighter version on my blog. So here's my verdict for the last year of my 20's.
2009

my heart is full and my door's always open, you come any time you want
It's roughly 30 days away from my 30th birthday. 2009 didn't quite bring what I was thinking it would. But alas, I must be just where I am supposed to be.
It's interesting how later in life you can see the same thing differently. Here are some things I see differently now.
Pop Culture Miscellany
1. Scarlett O'Hara (Gone w/ the Wind) was a fool. I used to love her, identify with her. Now I just realize how much she lied to herself.
2. Daisy Buchanan (The Great Gatsby) was a horrible person. I first identified with her, then Gatsby and now I am somewhere between Gatsby and the narrator Nick Carraway.
3. All those songs about secret love affairs are not romantic. They are sad.
4. I hope Jay Z is wrong. I don't want 30 to be "the new 20". I don't need to be "hot still". I just want to be better.
Life Miscellany
1. My mother was always right.
2. You can no more make someone love you than you can make the sun rise.
3. Everything cannot be your fault, unless you are also all powerful. (I am not, therefore, it isn't all my fault).
4. There will always be someone who is prettier, and younger.
5. I am no longer attracted to musicians. In my early twenties I was enamored with musicians as a whole. No one can break your heart like someone who uses your life/words/fights/quirks as material later, and then writes it into essential immortality.
6. It isn't all my fault, but some of it was.
7. Forgiving yourself feels better than losing 10 pounds. It might even look better than losing 10 pounds.

your faith was strong, but you needed proof
The weekend flew by. Knocked some things off the weekend agenda...
- The movie Brothers was intensely fantastic and has me all ready for Oscar season. Jake Gyllenhal was fabulous, and Toby Maguire had a strong performance. Also the screenplay is AMAZING. So real.
- Randy's (step-dad) 50th birthday party went well. We met in Topeka at Outback Steakhouse. My niece and I colored. She wanted to order ribs, she's 4.
- About half of my Christmas shopping is done
- Baking was successful
- Watched Four Christmases on demand and thought it was cutely typical
- Meaningful amounts of hot liquids (tea & cocoa)
- Watched FB with Dad, Cam & Matt at Kites in Shawnee
- Missed my girlfriends but kept up with their antics via text message
- Read a self-help book that did not help me

just guessin' at numbers & figures
I was walking up the front entrance to my building on Sunday, with my IPOD on...opening that big old door & heading up those big stairs and The Scientist (coldplay), as if on cue started to drown my ears. It was the oddest moment.
For one moment it made the past seem more real than now and made me unsure what I would find at the top of my stairs.
Uncomfortable with all of it I firmly pressed the forward button, shattered the illusion and moved on.
"tell me you love me, come back and haunt me. oh, what a rush to the start." coldplay

"I woke up from a nightmare that I could not stand to see,
You were wandering out on the hills of Iowa and you were not thinking of me." -Dar Williams

The other night I had a dream that I found an entire stack of old pictures of my grammy. Ones where she was just a girl.
I just can't seem to let the dream go. I keep thinking of one of the photos she was riding a bike. It's funny, I never saw her ride a bike, I am not sure if she ever did.
Guiding Light, my "story", is ending: it's a soap opera we always would talk about whenever we visited or on phone calls. I am honestly emotional about a soap opera that I've watched all my life being over, because it was "our" thing, one of our touchstones. Every night as I watch my DVR'd episode from that day I wonder if she is catching up on it too. I want to ask her if she wants Reva to end up with Josh or Jeffrey.

There's just never enough time, is there? There will always be more that you want to talk about, more that you want to do together, more that you want to say.
